66059-01 - Seminar: BrexLit (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2022
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Brexit 'done', and Britain undone? This seminar focusses on 'BrexLit' as a new genre of contemporary British literature. We will look at Brexit as a political and cultural event and explore the cultural discourses of Brexit with a focus on constructions of British/English identity as negotiated in mythmaking and fiction. How is literature involved in making the case for and against Brexit, and how does it go beyond the expression of political positions?
Learning objectives Students will learn about Brexit and explore the role of literature in the negotiation of this historical event in Britain. They will also practice and improve their skills in analysing fictional and non-fictional texts, placing them into the appropriate cultural contexts.
