Course frequency | Every 2nd spring sem |
Lecturers | Jannis Epting (jannis.epting@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | In increasingly densely populated and industrialized environments, sound knowledge of near-surface geological and hydrogeological processes is indispensable. Current environmentally relevant tasks such as the redevelopment of former industrial sites, environmental aspects during the planning, construction and operation of rail and road infrastructure require a sound knowledge of the geotechnical and hydrogeological properties of the subsurface. One focus of the course includes the development of basic geotechnical and geothermal knowledge. Special emphasis is placed on the protection of natural resources and the development of strategies to exploit near-surface geothermal potentials to achieve ambitious goals such as the 2,000 Watt Society. Using various case studies from the Basel region, current management concepts for the urban subsurface, including near-surface groundwater and energy resources, are presented. |
Learning objectives | Understanding relevant near-surface geologic and hydrogeologic processes at the urban scale. To provide basic geotechnical and geothermal knowledge and concepts for the characterization and use of the urban subsurface, including near-surface groundwater and energy resources. Discussion of approaches to environmentally relevant issues in urban areas (redevelopment of former industrial sites, infrastructure development, etc.). Raising awareness of possible strategies for geothermal use of the near-surface subsurface in relation to the climate debate. |
Bibliography | Suggestions for in-depth literature for each lecture block will be given in lecture. |
