| Content | The Quaternary period encompasses the last 2.5 million years and is characterized by repeated glaciations. During this period the Earth has experienced substantial climatic and environmental changes that interfered with ecological and social systems. Based on a detailed assessment of marine and terrestrial records from across the world this course shows how repeated glaciations shaped landscapes, ecosystems and human life. Lectures will also cover the fundamental driving mechanisms of Quaternary climate variability on annual to millennial timescales and how we can use palaeoclimate reconstructions to benchmark climate models. In practical sessions students will learn to develop, interpret and use paleoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental time series. |
