Content | Concept of heterogeneous catalysis - Material classes, their properties and catalytic applications in industry and research - Components of catalytic systems: catalyst surface, bulk, active site, support, promoter - Surface chemistry on a molecular-level: type of site, chemical environment, site distribution, strain, and stability, surface bond strengths, defects - Catalyst preparation: traditional vs single-site and surface organometallic strategies - Spectroscopic strategies for surface characterization: o Surface area and morphology: adsorption isotherms + chemisorption, physisorption, TPD, electron microscopy, .. o X-ray techniques: XPS, XAS, .. o Optical spectroscopy o Basic and advanced vibrational spectroscopy o Operando, in situ, and time-resolved studies - Thermodynamics and kinetics of heterogeneous catalysis, Sabatier principle, elementary catalytic steps on a surface - Side reactions, poisoning, catalyst restructuring and deactivation - Chemical and physical principles of catalyst design and surface manipulation - Selected examples from classic and current literature |
Learning objectives | Understand the challenges and opportunities of heterogeneous catalysis and the differences/parallels to homogeneous systems. Know important classes of materials and their use in catalysis. Think critically about surface studies. Understand fundamentals, information content, and limitations of various characterization techniques. Identify a suitable characterization strategy for a heterogeneous catalytic system and deduce surface properties from spectroscopic results. Understand general principles of interfacial chemistry and their influence on catalytic selectivity and activity. Propose reasonable surface design strategies to improve catalysis. |
