55567-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Einführungen in die Digital Humanities (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Vera Chiquet (vera.chiquet@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Christian Weber (c.weber@unibas.ch)
Content Given that primary sources of information are more often digitized and available online than ever before, how can humanities scholars use these sources to ask new questions? How can I understand or interpret 1,000 books at once? How can I create a visualization that people can interact with? The answers to these questions can be explored using a variety of digital tools, methods, and sources.
As museums, libraries, archives, and other institutions digitize collections and artifacts, new tools and standards have been developed to convert these materials into machine-readable data. Optical character recognition (OCR) and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), for example, have enabled humanities researchers to process large volumes of textual data. These advances are not limited to text, however. Sound, image, and video are also affected by these new forms of research.
This lecture will show you how to handle the many aspects of digital humanities research and scholarship.
Learning objectives The students deal with the important tendencies of Digital Humanities research in terms of content. The aim of the course is to recognize the scope and limits of theoretical positions represented in the texts or empirical research results presented. The students gain knowledge in the field of Digital Humanities.
Bibliography To be announced in the lecture.
Comments This is a trans-university (Uni Basel, Uni Bern, USI) introduction lecture that will take place exclusively online. The syllabus and the content will be published at the end of February.
