Content | In this lecture, we will study the roles of money and alternative means of payment in modern economies. We will be looking at the kind of frictions that make money essential and beneficial. On this basis, we will discuss various micro- and macroeconomic aspects of monetary theory and policy. 'Advanced Monetary Theory' builds on 'Monetary Theory. The difference is that we study the original papers in order to get advanced knowledge. |
Learning objectives | To gain a deep understanding of money and finance. Students are confronted with the research frontier and learn to read and understand advanced material. |
Bibliography | We will discuss research papers at the frontier of monetary economics. Relevant papers will be uploaded to the website. |

Assessment details | After the lecture 'Monetary Theory', the lecture 'Advanced Monetary Theory' starts. In this second part the students will present a paper at the research frontier of monetary theory. The papers will be based on the theory that we learned in the 'Monetary Theory' lecture. The final grade for 'Advanced Monetary Theory' is based on the student's presentation. Participation when other students present is mandatory. The lecture 'Monetary Theory' can be taken without taking 'Advanced Monetary Theory'. However, only students that have taken the lecture 'Monetary Theory' can also take 'Advanced Monetary Theory'.
