| Content | From late antiquity through the Middle Ages relics played a major role in shaping religious thought and practice. Relics took different forms: not only fragments of human bodies, but also material components of sacred landscapes (e.g., dirt, stones, spolia), as well as substances and objects that had been in contact with holy people and with other relics (so-called contact or secondary relics). This lecture course will examine both the forms relics took and the objects, works of art, monuments, practices and performances that were devised to enshrine and honor them, to assert their legitimacy and power, and to put them to work in late antique and medieval cultures. Von der Spätantike bis zum Mittelalter spielten Reliquien eine wichtige Rolle bei der Gestaltung des religiösen Denkens und der religiösen Praxis. Reliquien nahmen unterschiedliche Formen an: nicht nur Fragmente menschlicher Körper, sondern auch materielle Bestandteile heiliger Landschaften (z.B. Erde, Steine, Spolien) sowie Substanzen und Gegenstände, die mit heiligen Menschen und anderen Reliquien in Berührung gekommen waren (sogenannte Kontakt- oder Sekundärreliquien). Die Vorlesung untersucht sowohl die Formen, die Reliquien annahmen, als auch die Objekte, Kunstwerke, Denkmäler, Praktiken und performative Handlungen, die entwickelt wurden, um sie zu bewahren und zu ehren, ihre Legitimität und Macht zu bekräftigen und sie wirkkräftig in der spätantiken und mittelalterlichen Kultur zum Einsatz zu bringen. |
