| Content | As science and technology studies—and in particular laboratory studies—have shown, visual representations play a central role in scientific practice. One of the main contributions of this research tradition, however, has been to show that visual representations are not a neutral, and untransformed rendition of reality, but rather a highly mediated set of practices and activities through which realities are continually (re)enacted. In light of this research tradition, this seminar aims to examine visual representations as a set of semiotically, socially, culturally and materially mediated activities, and the ontologies they deploy, particularly in scientific practices, but also in craft and artistic practices. |
| Learning objectives | Students get familiarized with STS-informed approaches to visual representations and understand the key characteristics that distinguish them. Students initiate a reflection to explore the extent to which these approaches can be applied to plural practices. |
