Content | In his article, “Colonial museums in a postcolonial Europe” (2009), Robert Aldrich pointedly observes that visitors “to Europe’s grand old imperial capitals can find many reminders of co-lonial days and the imperial sunset. (...) Colonialists made great efforts to mark cities with signs of empire, the plaques and statues that sanctified great men (but only rarely great coloni-al women)” and that “Empire-building and museum-building went hand in hand”. In this sem-inar, we will concentrate on London’s iconic and contentious imperial statues, sights, monu-ments and museumscape - from the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens and the British Museum to Harry Beck’s classic London Underground Tube map - and re-visit them through literary, dramatic, poetic and artistic texts by British Asian, Arab and Black British writers and artists. Their innovative and critical explorations of London’s hidden imperial spaces and neglected histories and stories will guide us in our discussions of postcolonial memory, con-temporary commemoration and heritage politics. |
Learning objectives | Students will gain an understanding of the culture and politics of commemoration and post-colonial museology. |
Bibliography | Students should acquire the following text: Hanan Al-Shaykh, "Only in London" (2001). Theoretical and additional primary texts will be made available on ADAM. |
