Content | This course introduces students to one of the key activities in academic work, acquiring skills and experience that may be applied more generally in professional life. Together they will design, plan, organize and manage a meeting gathering Master’s students in the field of African Studies from Universities accross Europe, who will present their Master’s theses or other projects, and will engage in a discussion of issues of shared interest. The proposed date of the conference is 29-31 August 2024. In the framework of this course they will receive an introduction on how a conference functions and the essentials of conference planning but, by and large, work on their own with coaching from members of faculty in African Studies. At the core of this conference project is a deep and intense learning experience based on total immersion in a challenging enterprise – the conceptualization and planning of an academic conference including all elements and aspects of such an endeavor from A to Z: • Building a team with different bodies (organizing committee, program committee, support staff) assisted by an advisory board • Identifying a theme and/or core issues to be discussed • Phrasing a call document • Assembling the program committee and defining selection criteria • Raising funds • Communication, advertising and media relations • Organizing the program, venue and side-activities • Serving as host, panel chair, discussant, moderator, facilitator • Reporting and evaluating |
