10645-01 - Lecture: Monetary Theory (3 CP)

Content In this lecture, we will study the roles of money and alternative means of payment in modern economies. We will be looking at the kind of frictions that make money essential and beneficial. On this basis, we will discuss various micro- and macroeconomic aspects of monetary theory and policy.
Learning objectives Study the microfoundations of monetary theory.
Bibliography The lecture is based on the book "Money, Payments, and Liquidity" (MIT Press, 2nd edition) by Guillaume Rocheteau (University of California, Irvine) and Ed Nosal (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta).

After the lecture 'Monetary Theory', the lecture 'Advanced Monetary Theory' starts. In this second part the students will present a paper at the research frontier of monetary theory. The papers will be based on the theory that we just learned. The final grade for 'Advanced Monetary Theory' is based on the presentation. Participation when other students present is mandatory.

The lecture 'Monetary Theory' can be taken without taking 'Advanced Monetary Theory'. However, only students that have taken the lecture 'Monetary Theory' can attend 'Advanced Monetary Theory'.

IMPORTANT:
For courses with a main lecture exam, a repeat exam is offered in addition to the regular examination date.This repeat examination can only be taken if the student has taken part in and failed the regular examination (grade < 4.0) see English translation of the study guide of our master programs by December 13, 2021: Paragraph 4.13.4.1.
