Content | This course will cover principles and concepts of medicinal chemistry and its application to drug discovery. The course will commence with a historical background and introductory aspects to medicinal chemistry and subsequently cover the sciences impact on the various drug discovery phases and value chain (hit identification, lead identification, lead optimisation, clinical candidate selection) as well as future aspects of the science. |
Learning objectives | The goal of the course is to gain a solid understanding of medicinal chemistry and how this research function is used across the drug discovery value chain in the identification and the design of new drugs. Key concepts and strategies of structure-activity and structure-property relationships, compound identification and optimisation and clinical candidate selection should be understood. Course students should obtain a broad overview of different drugs and drug classes from various examples and case studies contained in this course and should be able to recognise and recall key features of such drug molecules. |
Bibliography | The following up-to-date textbook is recommended in support of the lecture course: The practice of Medicinal Chemistry, Camile George Wermuth, 4th Edition, AP Elsevier ISBN: 978-0-12-417205-0 |
