72878-01 - Seminar: European Values in Times of Crisis: A Comparison of Polish and Swiss Perspectives (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Laurent Goetschel (laurent.goetschel@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content European values are commonly referred to as given. Discussions about the war in Ukraine have shown how contested such values may be in times of crisis. The seminar looks at some foundational issues of political values and how they relate, in particular, to the European Union and its supposed identity. It analyses differences between ‘East’ and ‘West’ and looks in particular at the example of the war in Ukraine and expected international reactions. The comparison between Switzerland and Poland is a case study that is the center stage of the seminar and culminates in an excursion of three days to Posen in collaboration with Adam Mickiewicz University (Prof. Jaroslaw Janczak).
Learning objectives Participants are familiar with different conceptions of political values, the state of the art of European political values, and how they can be researched empirically. They know about differences in the perception of the War in Ukraine between Western and Eastern European States and the comparison between Switzerland and Poland in particular. Based on a field excursion in Posen, participants know about the history of core European values in Poland and they are able to compare them with political values in Switzerland.
Bibliography Will be provided on the ADAM workspace at the beginning of the course.
