Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has been in practice for more than 40 years and is nowadays part of our daily communicative habits. Research on these ways of interaction has thrived and developed in combination with the development of mediated online forms of communication. The literature on online forms of interaction is constantly growing so that we can profit from theoretical and methodological discussions on how best to approach mediated language use. In this lecture, you will be introduced to recent linguistic description of online data and will learn how to describe differences with respect to diverse online means. We will also explore the interconnectedness of online and offline communication channels and strategies.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students should
- have gained a thorough knowledge of key concept in CMC research
- be able to describe technical and social affordances of different CMC modes
- have sharpened their understanding of research challenges in CMC contexts
- be confident to find new research questions
