73097-01 - Seminar: The Politics of Restitution in Europe and Africa (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Henri-Michel Yéré (h.yere@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course will focus on the restitution of artefacts taken from Africa and disseminated throughout Europe and North America. We would like to understand the ways in which collections came to be constituted in the first place. We will consider the history and context of restitutions from Europe to Africa; and how they took place (or not) within Europe itself.
We will consider the field of provenance research, and situate its role in the context of contemporary restitutions.
We will think about restitution as a gesture of reparation and analyse reparation within the wider context of the debate opened by the historians of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
We will consider the case of the Benin Bronzes as a paradigmatic instance for the question of restitutions.
