Content | This course examines the role of race and gender in imperial wars. Rather than focus on “old” imperialism, we will focus on wars since the turn of the twentieth century. The course will begin with an overview of different theories of imperialism before moving to a discussion of specific wars during the early, mid and late twentieth century, and then ending with the twenty-first century. The course is not intended to provide a comprehensive overview of imperialism, but rather to discuss specific wars that illustrate the value and utility of race and gender to particular tactics prominently used in maintaining empire, including but not limited to counterinsurgency, counterterrorism, counterrevolution, imperial policing, and campaigns to suppress decolonization movements. For each war or conflict, we will read and discuss academic articles. Each week will also have suggested prose—poetry, memoir, or essays—that should be read but won’t necessarily be discussed in depth. However, the prose will play a role in the final assignment and should be kept up with throughout the semester. The course is intended to be an advanced course meant to stimulate intellectual and theoretical curiosities in how to think differently about war. Rather than a lecture-format, the course will be discussion-based with the expectation that all students participate in the conversation. The course is not meant foster debates about the wars, necessarily, but to ask critical questions about what role race and gender play in the enactment and memorialization of wars fought for imperial gain. Ultimately, this course is intended to interrogate concepts such as imperialism, imperialist, neo-colonial, empire, and decolonization and to ask, what counts as an imperial war? And, how do empires end and how do they live on? |
Admission requirements | The number of students in the course cannot exceed 30 students. In the event that more than 30 students register, decisions about admission will be made on the basis of discipline and whether the student is a BA or an MA student. Priority will be given to students in Gender Studies (MA and BA) Changing Societies, and European Global Studies, respectively. BA students from disciplines other than Gender Studies will only be permitted if space allows. |
