Content | The course addresses the impacts of urbanization on atmospheric processes and climate. Urban environments cause significant changes in the physical exchange processes at the land-atmosphere interface. We explore and quantify how cities influence meteorology and climate at various scales and present methods for measuring and concepts for modeling urban land-atmosphere interactions. The importance of urban climate for urban planning, health, and global climate is discussed in conclusion. Following the introductory lecture, the following modules with specific reference to urban climate are covered: 1) Airflow 2) Urban greenhouse gas emissions 3) Radiation 4) Energy balance 5) Urban heat islands 6) Thermal comfort 7) Urban air pollution 8) Macroclimates |
Learning objectives | --->We start in semester week 2 (Tuesday September 24) Students will be familiar with the local climatic changes and special aspects of the urban climate compared to rural surroundings. They will understand the fundamental physical and dynamic modifications in the urban boundary layer regarding radiation and energy balance, airflow, pollutant load, and thermal comfort. They will be able to clearly define and distinguish the different forms of urban heat islands. Additionally, they will learn about the effects of urban climate on larger scales (macroclimates) up to global climate change. |
