Content | The aim of this course is to teach students the practical aspects of how to run a measurement in the lab, control devices and do data acquisition. Technological developments in recent years have made equipment such as microcontrollers, computers and sensors available to the mass market, that are designed for do-it-yourself experiments that can be carried out at home. This allows typical lab tasks to be carried out with equipment that is accessible to everyone, which is why the Raspberry Pi single-board computer is used in this course. Topics such as analogue-to-digital conversion, sensor readout, robotics and aspects of control theory in the form of a PID loop are covered. An important part of the course is to gain a basic knowledge of the Python programming language, which will be used to carry out the tasks and experiments in the course. Python is a high-level programming language, comparatively easy to learn, and widely used in the scientific community, so its mastery is a very useful skill for anyone interested in working in an experimental laboratory. The course runs for 3 weeks, usually from 1pm to 5pm, in December (autumn semester) or May (spring semester), but can be adjusted slightly if necessary. In the rare event that there are too many registrations, a lottery will be held to decide who can attend. |
