Content Programm:
1. Introduction: anatomy of a protein, structure determination methods, molecular graphics
2. From polypeptide to structure: interactions, folds, homology
3. Structure/function relationships: proteases, kinase, phosphotases
4. Conformational changes: allosteric control, molecular symmetry, signal transduction
5. Filaments and aggregates: cytoskeleton, prions, amyloids
6. Molecular motors
7. Membranes and membrane proteins: transporters and channels, receptors
8. DNA structure and replication, RNA biosynthesis and nucleocytoplasmic transport
9. The ribosome, protein biosynthesis, chaperones, quality control & degradation
10. Bioenergetics: Mitochondrian ATP synthesis and Photosynthesis
11. Biosynthetic networks and complexes, multienzymes and assembly lines
12. Metabolic regulation: Sensors, signalling modules and cascades and the TOR complexes
13. Questions & Answers, test exam in subgroups
Learning objectives Folgende Fragen sollten am Ende des Kurses u.a. beantwortet werden können: Welche molekularen Wechselwirkungen bewirken Strukturbildung, welche wiederkehrenden Strukturmuster gibt es, inwieweit ist strukturelle Flexibilität wichtig, wie werden biologische Strukturen bestimmt, wozu werden strukturelle Erkenntnisse eingesetzt, wie können Strukturen vorhergesagt werden? Des weiteren werden die Studierenden mit ausgewählten Beispielen zu Struktur-Funktionsbeziehungen vertraut gemacht.
Bibliography Vortragsmaterialien werden elektronisch zur Verfügung gestellt. Generelle Biochemie- und Zellbiologie-Lehrbücher können zur Vor- und Nachbearbeitung herangezogen werden:
