Content | This course introduces general concepts of microbial cell structure and function and explains some basic molecular and cellular principles of bacterial growth and behavior. This includes a view of the overall cell structure of bacteria and a detailed survey of their cellular components with an emphasis on the cell envelope and the processes required to transport proteins and solutes across this important barrier. This lecture series also introduces important principles of bacterial virulence and discusses how antibiotics interfere with bacterial growth by specifically targeting conserved and essential cellular functions. Finally, the course introduces the most important predators of bacteria, bacteriophages, and explains how their capacity to effectively eradicate bacterial communities could be exploited to fight bacterial infections. |
Learning objectives | The main objectives of the course are to: 1.) Develop an understanding for how bacteria work at the molecular level; 2.) Understand that bacteria are small but highly adapted and complex entities of life that have optimized their biochemical processes and survival strategies throughout billions of years of evolution; 3.) Learn about the interaction of microbes with humans and understand how we can protect ourselves from their damaging representatives; 4.) Understand the action of antibiotics and the principles of emerging drug resistance mechanisms. |
