17728-01 - Lecture: Developmental Psychology III - Middle and Late Adulthood (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Emily Meachon (emily.meachon@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The second half of life is becoming increasingly prominent in developmental psychology, not least in response to the demographic changes of recent decades. In contrast to childhood and adolescence, development in middle and old age is extremely complex and multifaceted.

The lecture first provides an introduction to the theories and methods of lifespan developmental psychology. Subsequently, development in middle and older adulthood will be exemplified by the areas of personality, daily living skills, well-being, motor skills and cognition. Furthermore, changes in social relationships, including aspects of family development in the second half of life, are discussed. In each case, the focus is on age-specific problems and losses, with appropriate intervention options being discussed.
Learning objectives - Students know the most important concepts and theories of developmental psychology of the second half of life and related empirical support.
- Students know both the general laws and the individual differences in coping with transitions in the second half of life.
- Students will be able to critically contrast the various theoretical approaches and discuss their practical relevance.
Bibliography - Faltermaier, T., Mayring, P., Saup, W. & Strehmel, P. (2002). Entwicklungspsychologie des Erwachsenenalters. Stuttgart: Kohlhammer
