Content | Modern spectroscopic tools are indispensable for a molecular level understanding of chemical and biological phenomena. Whilst the development of new techniques is an important driver of fundamental research, there is now a wide range of established techniques available in the analytical toolbox of the (bio-)chemical sciences. This course covers the key concepts and tools for the spectroscopic analysis of molecular systems and places an emphasis on advanced optical techniques for the investigation of the electronic structure and dynamics of molecules. Topics covered in the course: • Light-matter interactions in molecules • Linear optical spectroscopy: absorption & fluorescence • Photoelectron spectroscopy • X-Ray spectroscopy • Nonlinear optical spectroscopy • Time-resolved spectroscopy |
Learning objectives | The aim of this course is to enable the participants to: • Explain how various linear and nonlinear spectroscopies retrieve molecular information • Discuss and interpret spectroscopic data of molecular systems • Use spectroscopic terminology and concepts to follow the scientific literature |
Bibliography | Books and current research articles will be referenced during the lecture. |
