Content | The seminar "Alienation and Reification Theories" focuses on two key concepts in critical social theory, exploring their historical development, changing interpretations, and contemporary relevance for analyzing social structures and phenomena. The course begins by offering a study of the foundational frameworks of Karl Marx and Georg Lukács. Building on this foundation, the seminar moves to explore the insights of the Frankfurt School, which shed light on how these phenomena are embedded in modern capitalist societies, with particular emphasis on their cultural and ideological dimensions. The course then transitions to contemporary reinterpretations, including the work of Rahel Jaeggi, which aim to reinvigorate these concepts for analyzing the complexities of current social dynamics. A significant emphasis is placed on the world of work and the economic structures underpinning capitalist societies. Through selected readings and discussions, participants will investigate how alienation and reification are manifested in today’s relations of production and exchange. |
Learning objectives | Learning Goals: • Conceptual Understanding: Develop a thorough comprehension of alienation and reification, including their origins, definitions, and applications in social theory. • Critical Analysis: Cultivate the ability to critically assess the relevance, analytical potential and pssibile contradictions in these theories. • Theoretical Application: Learn to apply these concepts to various social phenomena, enhancing the capacity to analyze and interpret complex social dynamics. By the conclusion of the seminar, participants should be equipped to critically engage with and apply the theories of alienation and reification to historical and contemporary social contexts. |
