74381-01 - Research seminar: Funerary Practices in Egypt during the Last Millennium (700 BC-300 AD). A Dialogue between Archaeology and Papyrology: Proven Methods and New Tools (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Frédéric Colin (frederic.colin@unibas.ch)
Sandrine Vuilleumier (sandrine.vuilleumier@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The Universities of Basel and Strasbourg share a dynamic body of research on funerary practices in the Theban region during the last thousand years of the history of polytheistic Egypt. This is reflected particularly in the archaeological excavations in the Asasif, in the vicinity of the tomb of Padiamenemope (TT 33), work on the temple of Deir el-Medina, and a wide-ranging study of the local funerary literature of the Graeco-Roman period. The organisers of this course are keen to share their joint and complementary interests with master's and doctoral students and to develop a constructive dialogue about their practices, methods and results.
The teaching is therefore based on the methods of archaeology and papyrology, two complementary disciplines that are rarely taught together, as they belong to separate training courses. Through case studies based on the organisers’ and guest lecturers’ ongoing research, the joint seminar will give students an opportunity to discover the most recent work on funerary practices in the Theban region, as well as to learn about and experiment with the original methodes and processes used in their projects.

The course programme is as follows:
Online introductory module on 27 February.
Study day in Strasbourg on 5 March.
