Content | Adenosine is a neuromodulator that ubiquitously presents in neural systems. The A2A adenosine receptors (A2AR) are co-localized with dopamine D2R receptors in striatum. Through an allosteric interaction between A2AR and D2R by the formation of heterodimers, inhibiting adenosinergic signaling, such as using its antagonist caffeine, can potentiate the dopaminergic signaling. To date, while adenosinergic modulation of dopamine signaling has been newly applied in treating Parkinson’s diseases, a critical gap still lies at the lack of in vivo human evidence on the mechanisms and functionality of A2AR–D2R interaction from basic studies. As the first step, we will conduct a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over study, using placebo, non-selective A2A antagonist, and selective D2R agonist, to examine the psychomotor stimulation and reinforcement in young healthy volunteers. This behavioral evidence will provide clinical implications on the potential of using adenosinergic agents in treating dopamine-based neuropsychiatric disorders. |
Learning objectives | The primary goal for the student is to learn how to formulate hypotheses, conduct experiments, and understand the uses of statistics as well as write a report in a quality of peer-review journal paper. More specifically, you will be responsible for recruiting and screening the participants, assisting in the experiments, and analyzing the data you are interested in writing into a Master's thesis. Additionally - depending on the situation when the semester starts - you may also get to familiarize the early-stage study preparation, such as an application of the ethical approval, writing a registered report, or expe-riments preparation. |
