74468-01 - Master's project: Caffeine Effects on Sleep and Cognition (4 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Carolin Reichert (carolin.reichert@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Caffeine is a widely used psychostimulant in the daily life of the modern society. However, it is not known under which conditions it can disturb sleep and affect cognitive functions. We investigate possible influences of the substance on sleep, the internal clock, attention, reward processing, and risk behaviour depending on the pattern of use (daily vs. single use), depending on age (teenagers vs. adults), and/or depending on sleep history.

Contact: carolin.reichert@upk.ch
Learning objectives This project aims to investigate the neurocognitive effects of caffeine intake on the sleep-wake and the reward-system by different psychophysiological methods (e.g., electro-encephalography, cognitive tasks, questionnaires, hormone analyses etc.) in healthy participants. Depending on the project, a master student will focus on one of these variables and accordingly develop expertise in application of measures, data analyses, and interpretation of results. During the project, a master student will gain insights into sleep- and/or chronobiological research questions and studies.
Comments The individual appointments will be arranged personally with the supervisors. Course location: Centre for Chronobiology, UPK Wilhelm Klein-Strasse 27, 4002 Basel
