Content Researchers who plan to involve live subjects – humans and non-human animals – in their research can only do so after having made an ethics application to a responsible body for ethical evaluation and authorization. The ethical decision-making involves weighing the expected benefits of the research against the potential risks and harms to the research subjects. The criteria used for research involving animals is generally different from that of human subjects. There are also emerging proposals for the need to increase human-specific research in place of animal experiments.
The aim of this course is to explore the basic foundations of research ethics and compare the ethics of animal experiments with human subject research. The course will also discuss different perspectives on the utility of animal experiments for human medicine and the prospects of doing more human-specific studies in place of animal studies.
Learning objectives To understand research ethics
To explore the similarities and differences in animal experiments and human clinical research
To discuss the utility of animal and clinical research in advancing human medicine.
