74726-01 - Lecture: Early Modern Metapainting (2 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Aaron Michael Hyman (aaron.hyman@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This class treats the topic of early modern metapaintings—that is, paintings that reflect on what a painting is in the first place. Each session will begin with a dense puzzle picture—Velázquez’s The Weavers or Cornelis Gijsbrecht’s The Back of the Painting or Parmigianino’s Self-Portait in a Convex Mirror, for example—that will serve as a guiding vector. In unraveling the rhetoric (and sometimes mysteries) of these pictures along with the social dynamics that led to their creation, students will come over the course of the semester to understand some of the fundamental visual mechanics of the early modern painting.
