74320-01 - Lecture: Language and Emotion in the History of English (2 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Julia Landmann (julia.landmann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This lecture delves into the intricate relationship between language and emotion throughout the history of the English language. By examining linguistic features such as emotive interjections in Chaucer and the metaphorical expressivity in Shakespeare, students will explore how language has been used to convey emotion across different historical periods.

Key topics include:

- The analysis of emotive language in medieval and early modern English literature.
- The role of metaphor and other linguistic devices in expressing emotion in classical works.
- The influence of socio-cultural and historical factors on language use and emotional expression.
- The evolution of emotive language from historical texts to contemporary forms, with a specific emphasis on social media contexts.

Students will gain insights into how language shapes and is shaped by emotional expression and cultural contexts. By tracing the historical development of emotive language, this course offers a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interplay between language and emotion.

This lecture will be held twice a week during the regular semester: every Monday from 14:00 to 16:00 and every Wednesday from 12:00 to 14:00, running through the end of March.
Learning objectives At the end of this seminar students

This includes skills in examining emotive interjections, metaphorical language, and other expressive tools in literature from different historical periods.
