66061-01 - Research seminar: Relational Work in Fiction (4 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course we will combine an interest in the pragmatics of fiction with an interest in relational work and (im)politeness ideologies. We will first work on key concepts and approaches from both fields and then compile our own corpus of "moments of relational work" from fictional artefacts. In doing so, we will explore the role of linguistic and multi-modal indexicals for character creation and explore how these are staged for effect. Students are expected to work on fictional data of their own choice and apply key concepts derived from interpersonal pragmatics to their data.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students
- can explain the construction of relational work scenes in fiction
- have gained experience in applying theoretical concepts to their own data
- can develop new research questions of their own
