Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Zeynep Köylü (zeynep.koylu@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This research seminar looks into the paradigm shift known as the "multilingual turn" (May, 2013) in second language acquisition (SLA) research in an attempt to understand the evolving role of English in multilingual settings. Drawing on research and theoretical perspectives, the course examines how multilingualism challenges traditional SLA frameworks with a normative and rather monolingual stance. Key topics to be covered include multilingual practice, competence, and identity building, translanguaging practices, cross-linguistic influence, some sociocultural dimensions of multilingualism, and the mediating role of English. Special attention will be given to the role of English as a global lingua franca and its interaction with other languages in diverse multilingual contexts, its role as a mediating language for multilingual acquisition, including educational, professional, and intercultural settings. Through evidence-based discussions, data analysis sessions, and discussions, students will critically evaluate the implications of the multilingual turn for [English] SLA research.
