Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Christiane Schlote (christiane.schlote@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Helen Mirren called theatre the “identity of our nation that is em-bedded in what it means to be British” and that one “of the great contributions that our coun-try has made to the world is through theatre, through writing and performing”. In this seminar, we will explore how contemporary British playwrights have responded to key national and international events – ranging from Jez Butterworth’s acclaimed epic exploration of ‘old Eng-land’ "Jerusalem" (2009) to Lucy Kirkwood’s geopolitical thriller "Chimerica" (2013) about the protests in Tiananmen Square – and we will discuss dramatic representations of, among other topics, social change, regional and ethnic identities and globalisation as well as a variety of theatrical forms, including verbatim theatre, political satire and the ‘state-of-the-nation’ play. |
Learning objectives | Students will develop critical and analytical skills to explore different dramatic forms and conventions and acquire an understanding of dramatic representations of theories and pro-cesses of globalisation |
Bibliography | Primary and theoretical texts will be made available on ADAM. |
