Semester | spring semester 2025 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Peter Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This course will introduce a number of performance practices in what can be divided into two fields: drama or theatre on the one hand, and performance or intervention on the other. This means that we will consider some classic examples of drama texts, while also looking closely and carefully reading art practices that involve performance in different forms. Works included in the material we will consider are Samuel Beckett’s "Not I", Shelagh Delaney's "A Taste of Honey", Sarah Kane’s "Blasted". Performance works will include those by among others Adrian Piper, Simone Forti, Yoko Ono, Valie Export, CAConrad, Rose English, PopeL and more. |
Learning objectives | Students will learn key terminology referencing drama and performance. Students will learn about major figures in Performance. Students will read central critical texts in drama and performance studies, with the view to integrating and positioning these thinkers into a general understanding of the cultural in general and the political in particular. Students will engage in discussing and critiquing each others' ideas and presentations of short extracts from plays or examples of performance, thus arriving at a synthesis of critical positions through group work. |
Bibliography | Texts will be announced at the beginning of the course |
