10904-01 - Lecture: Operating Systems (8 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Further events belonging to these CP 10904-01 (Lecture)
10904-02 (Practical course)
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Florina M. Ciorba (florina.ciorba@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Osman Simsek (osman.simsek@unibas.ch)
Content The Operating Systems course has an introductory character.
It covers the fundamental techniques and data structures used in modern operating systems
It also covers topics such as concurrency, deadlocks, file systems, virtual memory, I/O, virtualization, and touches upon security, and integrity.
The course is organized into three parts.
1. The first part offers an introduction and history of operating systems.
2. The second describes concurrency in terms of processes, threads, their scheduling, as well concurrency control and deadlocks.
3. The last part will address memory management, file systems, and will touch upon security and privacy aspects.

The course will integrate a programming project which can be worked on in small groups.
This will offer the opportunity to learn and balance teamwork with individual contributions, and practice presentation techniques for communicating the project ideas, plans, results, and insights.
Learning objectives The learning objectives of this course are to understand the concepts of operating systems and related aspects such as:
1. The characteristics and the design principles behind modern operating systems.
2. Scheduling by the operating system and management and execution of processes.
3. Memory management.
4. Structure and organization of file systems.
5. Mechanisms for protecting system resources
6. Interplay between the hardware components (see the "Computer Architecture and Trustworthy Computing" course in fall semesters) and the software that runs on them, which render a computer useful.
