Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Once only

Content Human remains have long attracted scholarly and public interest. Today, we encounter human remains in the most diverse settings, from battle fields and graveyards to museum storage rooms and exhibition spaces. Accordingly, to establish their status as dead persons, unidentified victims, relics, generic bodies for scientific research, trophies or museum exhibits is a contentious matter, both in the past and in the present. This Ringvorlesung explores, questions, and problematizes the multiple ways in which human remains figure in the material, discursive and representational practices of academic disciplines (among them medicine, forensic science, archaeology, anatomy, history – to name but a few), public institutions (including museums and mortuaries), as well as in cultural and religious practice, memory work, and various fora of conflict resolution. The Ringvorlesung consists of a series of lectures by scholars from diverse areas of specialization within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, each one offering a specific disciplinary, empirical and conceptual perspective on how to think with and about human remains.
Comments The Ringvorlesung will begin the first week of the semester: 17.2.

The languages will be English and German.

Each session will be presented by a different scholar; the week after each session will be further discussed in the practical course of Lorena Rizzo, on Monday 14h-16h. see (https://vorlesungsverzeichnis.unibas.ch/en/course-directory?id=292102), Students who want to go deeper on the topic can register there too (this is fully optional).
