74833-01 - Seminar: Roman Religion in Context: An Introduction (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Harriet Isabel Flower (harrietisabel.flower@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Roman Religion in Context: An Introduction
Römische Religion im Kontext: Eine Einführung
Harriet I. Flower (Princeton University)

This course will examine the varieties of religious expression and experience in ancient Rome with a focus on the traditional religion in its own terms before the advent of Christianity.

In the first part of the semester, we will survey the characteristics of Roman religion and its close relationship with republican political culture. Special attention will be paid to the ancient sources and to how we know what we think we know about traditional Roman religion. Sources will include literary texts, inscriptions, and material culture. Modern approaches to Roman religion will be discussed. We will consider how religion(s) can be studied in cases where no practitioners survive to explain their world view or ritual system.
In the last part of the semester students will give reports about specific topics that they have themselves researched individually. These discussions will be informed by the approaches and contexts we have explored in our initial, general discussions.

Knowing Latin is not a requirement for this course, but we will inevitably make use of some Latin terms to describe religious sites or rituals or offices, which do not have exact equivalents in modern European languages.

Goals of the course: To consider how we can understand the traditional Roman religion and its relationship to republican politics and society.
