74800-01 - Seminar: Business-Society Relations in India (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Manfred Max Bergman (max.bergman@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content With over 1.44 billion inhabitants, India is the world’s most populous democracy and predicted to lead the world in global economic growth by the end of the decade. The demographic dividend of a young population (the median age is less than 29, compared to over 42 and 44 in Switzerland and the EU, respectively), in conjunction with rapid sociotechnological development and cultural change, provide considerable opportunities for business, science, technology, and innovation. Considering India merely as a “market” fundamentally underestimates its current and future importance as well as the confidence with which India is seeking or taking on world-leading roles. The aim of this seminar is to expose participants to the complex business-society dynamics that define this rapidly changing nation. Lectures from a variety of business-society researchers and professionals in India will provide a contextualized foundation, based on which course participants will explore specific business-society topics in more detail as part of a seminar.
Learning objectives - explore different types of relations between business and society across sectors, geography, and ideology in India
- recognize opportunities and challenges in different business-society configurations
- understand the systemic character of Indian society and its institutions in an economic, social, and political context
