74903-01 - Seminar: Sentiment Analysis for the Humanities (3 CP)

Content Sentiment Analysis is the study of affective states and subjective information expressed in text. This course covers theoretical foundations, practical tools and an overview of the limitations of different sentiment analysis methods. After getting acquainted with basic techniques using free online resources for SA, students will learn to apply R packages such as sentimentr, syuzhet, and sentiArt as well as more advanced machine learning techniques (BERT) to analyze sentiment in various textual data types, including social media posts, press releases, literary texts, and interview transcripts. The final module of the course provides students with tools to address the interpretation of results using basic key concepts from descriptive and inferential statistics.

The evaluation of this course will consist of a fail/pass assessment based on 2 aspects:

Your participation in class
Your own SA research project in the form of a presentation during the final session
Bibliography Scientific articles will be assigned in-between sessions

 

Admission requirements The number of participants is limited. In case of over-subscription, students of Digital Humanities will be given priority.
