69461-01 - Lecture: What is Anthropology? (2 CP)

Semester fall semester 2025
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers George-Paul Meiu (gp.meiu@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The central aim of this course is to provide students with a basic language for engaging with and understanding contemporary global anthropology. What is distinct about an anthropological perspective? What can anthropology teach us about the world at large? And what is the significance of a critical anthropological approach for a world structured by inequalities, exploitation, and practices of political and economic marginalization? In order to answer these questions, the lectures and films of the course will familiarize students with the basic conceptual and theoretical vocabulary of the discipline as well as with some of its leading figures. Students will learn about the kinds of questions anthropologists ask, about the social domains they explore, and about some of the methodological and ethical dilemmas with which they struggle.
