Semester | fall semester 2025 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Konrad Tiefenbacher (konrad.tiefenbacher@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This course provides an introduction to supramolecular chemistry. Prior knowledge in supramolecular chemistry is not a prerequisite for this course. We will first cover the basic concepts of supramolecular chemistry: non-covalent interactions, host-guest chemistry, binding constant determination and binding strength. Subsequently, we will take a closer look at how to bind different species: cations, anions and neutral organic molecules. Towards the end of the semester, we will cover self-assembly processes and applications of supramolecular structures as simple enzyme mimetics. |
Learning objectives | After this course, the student is expected to understand and be able to apply the basics of supramolecular chemistry: host-guest interactions, host design, self-assembly and simple enzyme mimetics. |
Bibliography | The lecture slides are provided online via ADAM. No additional literature is required. If additional information is desired, the book Supramolecular Chemistry, From Concepts to Applications, De Gruyter 2020, written by Prof. Stefan Kubik is recommended. |
