Content | Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are currently leading to changes in the way research is done in many fields. This lecture wants to give an overview of ways this is used in different areas of physics. An introduction to the basic approaches used in the field of machine learning is given, which is then followed by a discussion of examples from recent publications. Using this example the general idea is then further discussed. Examples are from the field of signal processing, statistical analysis, solving physical equations in the form of ODE and PDE, as well as methods for parameter estimation and inverse problems. |
Learning objectives | The lecture will start with a (short) introduction to ML and AI and its different applications. Afterwards the usage for different physics applications will be discussed using some specific applications as starting point and then generalizing from it. At the end the participants should have both a basic understanding of the underlying ML/AI concepts and should be able to link to the closest way this can be applied to their own field |
Bibliography | Some literature, especially related to the applications discussed in the lecture will be given during the course. General overview lectures both on machine learning / AI / deep learning in general and specific to scientific applications will be given as well |
Admission requirements | A basic understanding of mathematics and statistics, as well as, of physics is expected. The exercises will require to be able to program in the Python language. |
