| Content | Cohort studies in complex disease etiology cohort methods; real life examples for air pollution, noise, occupational exposure, physical activity and nutrition; epidemiological approach to assess risks across the life course NCDs: burden of disease and risk factors data sources, epidemiological measures, major diseases & risk factors Genetic epidemiology application of genetics and genomics to the NCD epidemiology approach Exposome, phenome and precision health principles paradigm shift towards investigation of completeness of exposures and outcome characterization. Genome-wide association studies background; how-to; principles of the agnostic approach Biobanking and utility of biomarkers international guidelines for biobanking; infrastructural needs; ethical-legal-social-implications of biobanking and genomic; relevance of biomarkers |
| Learning objectives | At the end of the course students will understand the basic concepts of chronic disease epidemiology, the main risk factors of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD), novel and classical approaches of evidencing NCD risk factors, the relevance and methods of cohorts and biobanks, the utility and limitations of biomarkers, the exposome concept, and as well as their public health relevance. Emphasis is placed on critical appraisal, research design, and collaborative group analysis as sketching and presenting a hypothetical NCD-cohort project is the course assessment. |
