Content | The goal of the course is to learn about current topics and concepts in Cell Biology, going well beyond the basic Cell Biology course. It will cover the following topics: - Post-translational modifications - General principles of signaling - Signaling receptors - Complex cellular examples of signaling - Chromatin organization - Transporter and Carriers - Glycolysis, TCA cycle and Warburg Effect - Metabolic Disorders and the heel prick test - Regulation of metabolism - Cell cycle and Mitosis - The secretory pathway - Endocytosis and endosomes - Autophagy - Membrane contact sites |
Learning objectives | The goal of the Advanced Cell Biology course is to increase the understanding of cellular processes and how these processes are connected. The course is set up in a way that it promotes critical thinking and assessment of the participating students. At the end of the class the students should have a better understanding about cellular processes and how these contribute to cell, tissue and organismal organization and homeostasis, and how they are important in health and disease. |
Comments | The course is taught in a ‘flipped classroom’ style. The students are expected to work through the material provided for the class in advance. During the presence time in class, discussions on the covered topics are held and questions are answered. The discussions will be first in small groups and will be guided by questions to be answered. In the second part, the answers will be discussed in the plenum. It is the expectation that this active learning style will provide better understanding of the topics. The students are expected to bring a laptop or tablet etc. to the class. This course is taught in English. At the end of the course, there will be a written exam. |
Admission requirements | Participating students should have a basic understanding of cellular processes and the organization of eukaryotic cells. Ideally, they have successfully completed the ‘Zellbiologie’ lecture course. The students are expected to be familiar with - transcription, translation, protein degradation, ubiquitin - the secretory and endocytic pathway - cellular organelles and their function - genome organization, chromosomes, nucleosomes, histones - metabolic pathways including glycolysis and ß oxidation. |
