Content | 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The vow “Never Again,” made by many political leaders and survivors in 1945, seems to be perpetually broken. Moreover, former victors manipulate and misuse the legacy of the Second World War to justify comparable atrocities against civilian populations. This course aims to refocus attention on the history of the Second World War as experienced on the Eastern Front, stretching from the Baltics in the north to the Balkans in the south. Throughout the sessions, we will read and discuss the most recent scholarly literature (both in English and German) to critically examine complex and difficult concepts, including the dichotomies of victims and perpetrators, allies and enemies, collaboration and resistance. We will also explore aspects of post-war reconstruction, along with its social and economic challenges. Additionally, the course will examine the question of memory and remembrance of the Second World War, highlighting concrete examples of how the war’s legacy has been manipulated to serve political and geopolitical purposes. |
