| Content | Horace Walpole Roman The Castle of Otranto (1764) gilt als Ausgangspunkt der Gothic Novel, die in England mit Lewis’ The Monk (1796), Radcliffes The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) oder dann Shelleys Frankenstein (1818) ihren Höhepunkt erreicht. Die sogenannte «Schwarze Romantik» zog aber auch im deutschsprachigen Raum immer mehr Autor:innen und Leser:innen in ihren Bann. Im frühen 19. Jahrhundert erkunden u.a. Ludwig Tieck, August Klingemann und E.T.A. Hoffmann in ihren Erzählungen und Romanen die Abgründe der menschlichen Existenz, von den Untiefen der Psyche in Traum und Wahnsinn, über körperlichen Verfall und gewaltsamen Tod bis zum Übernatürlich-Dämonischen und der Faszination für eine morbide Erotik. Ein Interesse am Bösen, Hässlichen und Okkulten, für ambivalente Gefühlskombinationen wie Furcht und Lust, Angst und Neugier prägt Texte wie z.B. Tiecks «Runenberg» (1804), Klingemanns Nachwachen von Bonaventura (1805) oder Hoffmanns Elixiere des Teufels (1815). Im Seminar werden wir uns diese und weitere Texte der Schwarzen Romantik erschliessen, ihre ästhetischen Verfahren, typischen Motive und Stilmittel in den Blick nehmen sowie ideen- und sozialgeschichtliche Kontexte reflektieren. Zur Einstimmung und Vorbereitung wird empfohlen, schon einmal Hoffmanns Elixiere des Teufels (Reclam Ausgabe) zu lesen. |
