| Content | Jüdische Musik zwischen Tradition und Moderne In der Interkulturellen Musikwissenschaft bezeichnet das Begriffspaar „Tradition“ und „Moderne“ einerseits die mündliche Überlieferung klingender Musik, wie sie im Judentum bis heute praktiziert wird und andererseits das Einbeziehen von Tonaufnahmen und Notationen in Erinnerungsprozesse. Beide Neuerungen schaffen eine erweiterte Öffentlichkeit und ermöglichen damit Formen gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe und Kontrolle, die im Rahmen einer internen Tradition, die ausschließlich mündlich erfolgt, kaum möglich sind. Im Zentrum des Kurses stehen künstlerische Entwicklungen, die seit dem 20. Jahrhundert durch modern Medien und die hiermit verbundene "sekundäre Oralität" weltweit zu einer Fortführung und kreativen Erneuerung traditioneller Genres, wie zum Beispiel der Synagogenmusik, des Klezmers und des judäo-spanischen Liedes beitragen. Komponierte Musik und Popularmusik werden ebenfalls in unsere Betrachtung einbezogen. Darüber hinaus widmen wir uns dem Phänomen der in Deutschland seit dem 19. Jahrhundert umfassend einsetzenden Verschriftlichung aschkenasischer Synagogenmusik, deren Aufkommen mit gesellschaftspolitischen Veränderungen im Lande einhergeht. Zu Beginn der Veranstaltung erfolgt ein Überblick über die relevanten Literatur- und Klangdokumente. Eine Einführung in die Methoden der Musikethnologie, insbesondere der Feldforschung, schließt sich an. Im Rahmen einer Exkursion in die Synagoge von Basel werden sie praktisch eingeübt. Der Kurs ist interdisziplinär angelegt, so dass die TeilnehmerInnen gemäß der in ihren jeweiligen Fächern vorherrschenden Methodik Beiträge leisten und ihre unterschiedlichen Perspektiven miteinander verknüpfen können. Die offene Konzeption des Kurses erlaubt, individuelle Interessen und Vorkenntnisse der Studierenden gezielt einzubeziehen. Für die Teilnahme sind weder Vorkenntnisse aus der Musikwissenschaft noch aus den Jüdischen Studien erforderlich. Die Leistungsnachweise erfolgen über Referate. Jewish Music between Tradition and Modernity In the domain of intercultural musicology, the concepts 'tradition' and 'modernity' are employed to denote, on the one hand, the oral tradition of sounding music, as it is still practiced in Judaism. On the other hand, the term 'modernity' refers to the inclusion of sound recordings and notations into memory processes. The impact of both innovations has been to expand to the public sphere and thus potentially lead to new forms of social participation and control that aren’t likely within the framework of an exclusively internal tradition on the base of oral transmission. In Jewish music today, public space is primarily virtual and urban. The course will focus on artistic developments since the twentieth century that employ modern media and the associated 'secondary orality' to facilitate the continuation and creative renewal of traditional genres, including synagogue music, klezmer, and Judeo-Spanish song. In addition, we will discuss both composed music and popular music. The course will thus deal with the extensive notation of Ashkenazi synagogue music in Germany since the nineteenth century, the emergence of which goes hand in hand with sociopolitical changes in the country. We will begin with an overview of the pertinent literature and sound documents. In addition, an introduction to the methods of ethnomusicology, in particular field research, will be provided. These will be practiced during an excursion to the synagogue in Basel. The course is designed to be interdisciplinary, allowing participants to contribute according to the prevailing methodology in their respective subjects and combine their different perspectives. The open structure of the course enables students to integrate their individual interests and existing knowledge in a focused manner. No prior knowledge of musicology or Jewish studies is necessary for participation. The course will be evaluated through the medium of presentations. |
