76498-01 - Research seminar: Influencer Discourse in English (4 CP)

Semester fall semester 2025
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course we will explore social media influencer discourse in English by drawing on pragmatic and discourse analytic research to understand phenomena such as linguistic and multi-modal acts of identity construction, persuasion, branding, affect, cancellation and (anti)fandom. Drawing on recent research (e.g. the edited collection by Garcés-Conejos Blitvich & Georgakopoulou 2024), we will explore the activities of influencers from different fields and explore their interaction with and orientation to target audiences.
Learning objectives At the end of this course, students should
(1) know and can apply the introduced key terminology of the field of discourse analysis and pragmatics to data,
(2) have acquired knowledge about social media computer-mediated communication affordances and their exploitations,
(3) have read the assigned texts critically, and judged the introduced studies with respect to the methods employed.
Bibliography Texts will be made available in the ADAM course folder. In particular, we will draw on: Garcés-Conejos Blitvich, Pilar, & Georgakopoulou, Alexandra (Eds.). (2024). "Influencer Discourse: Affective Relations and Identities". Amsterdam/Philadelphia: John Benjamins.
