Course frequency | Once only |
Lecturers | Ingrid Anna Greenfield (ingridanna.greenfield@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This seminar explores ceramics produced and circulated in the greater Mediterranean sphere from the tenth century through the sixteenth century, including pottery-producing centers in Mamluk Egypt and Syria, Valencia, Umbria and Tuscany, with forays into regions farther afield but connected by historic trade routes, such as Britain, China, Mali. Assigned readings and class discussion will consider the sources and use of raw materials, cultural exchange and hybridity, intermediality, the development of decorative lexicons, and evolving consumer tastes. Our art historical interest in form, function, and style will be complemented by hands-on experimentation with clay. Several class meetings will be held at a local pottery studio, introducing students to the basic operations of a ceramics workshop and providing hands-on experience in clay construction and ornamentation. As a final project, students will create their own ceramic object inspired by selected examples studied in the course, and give a short presentation on the specific historical methods and cultural context for these techniques and imagery. |
