| Content | Why and when does man laugh? Can one laugh at everything? What is the control to be exercised in this uncontrollable phenomenon? In the Early modern period (1450-1600), laughter was interpreted by writers, philosophers primarily as a legitimate desire to recreate human soul from life’s pains as well to cultivate a healthy balance between excessive seriousness and vulgar immoderation. The first part of the seminar will focus on the main theories on ridicule and laughter (Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian) and their reception in the 15th and 16th centuries (Pontano, Castiglione). In the second part we will deal with laughter in its therapeutic function through textual analysis of some extracts from Ariosto’s Orlando furioso, Theophilus Folengo’s Baldus and humanistic literature. The seminar will be conducted in English; the texts will be available in original language with an English translation. No prior knowledge of Italian literature is required for this seminar. Come altre epoche della storia occidentale, anche nell’età rinascimentale ci si è interrogati sulle dinamiche, sulla funzione e sui limiti di un fenomeno universale: il riso. Perché e quando l’uomo ride? Si può ridere di tutto? Quale è il controllo da esercitare in questa manifestazione, di per sé incontrollabile? Nel periodo che va dalla metà del XV alla metà del XVII sec., il riso fu interpretato da scrittori, filosofi e trattatisti anzitutto come la manifestazione di una necessità connaturata all’animo umano: quella di ricrearsi dalle fatiche e di coltivare un sano equilibrio tra eccessiva serietà e smodatezza volgare, attraverso la nozione aristotelica di eutrapelia, in una sostanziale continuità col pensiero medievale. La prima parte del seminario sarà dedicata a presentare le principali teorie sul ridicolo e sul riso (Platone, Aristotele, Cicerone, Quintiliano) e la loro ricezione nel XV e XVI sec. (Pontano, Castiglione); nella seconda ci occuperemo del riso in funzione terapeutica attraverso estratti dall’Orlando furioso di Ariosto, dal Baldus di Teofilo Folengo e dalla letteratura umanistica. Il seminario, aperto a tutte le persone interessate, sarà svolto in lingua inglese su testi in italiano e traduzione inglese. |
