Content | In this seminar we ask how nature and wildlife conservation in Southern Africa has been—and continues to be—deeply entangled with capitalist extraction and colonial expansion. From the creation of colonial game reserves to today's luxury eco-tourism, carbon markets, and land grabs justified by climate action, conservation has often served economic and political interests of the powerful. Centered on Southern African experiences and examples, the course highlights how capitalism has shaped (conservation) landscapes, rural livelihoods, and notions of "nature" while also looking at resistance against and alternative/progressive visions for conservation in Southern Africa and beyond. |
Learning objectives | Learning goals include: critically analyzing conservation as a political-economic project, understanding its historical roots in dispossession and exploitation, and engaging with past and present debates on land, conservation, and environmental justice more broadly. |
